The Lobé falls: where a river drops into the ocean
Seven kilometres from Kribi, the Lobé river does what almost no river does: it falls into the Atlantic as a waterfall. How to get there, what to look at, and why you remember it for a long time.

You hear the falls before you see them. A low rumble behind the trees, then the light opens up, and you stand there, not quite knowing what to say: in front of you, a whole river is falling into the ocean.
What almost no river does
The Lobé falls are seven kilometres south of Kribi. What makes them rare in the world: the Lobé river does not reach the sea through an estuary, it drops straight into the Atlantic Ocean. It is Kribi’s main attraction, and one of the pictures people keep of Cameroon.

A living coast
Around the falls lie long beaches of fine sand: two species of sea turtle, the leatherback and the olive ridley, come to lay their eggs there. A conservation project watches over them with the fishing villages of the coast. One more reason to leave nothing behind.

How to get there
- From Kribi: the falls are about 7 km south of the town.
- Once there: agree on prices before any service, guide or canoe.
- Bring: something against the sun, and good shoes for the rocks.
