In short

NiceThings works without an account. We don't sell any data and there is no targeted advertising.

What stays on your phone

Your saved places, chosen neighbourhood and language are stored in your browser. They are not sent to our servers. Clearing the site's data removes them.

Your location

We only ask for your location when you tap “Use my location”. It is used in your browser to sort places by distance.

To calculate directions and guide you, your position and the destination are sent to OpenStreetMap's OSRM routing service (FOSSGIS servers). During guidance your position is followed in your browser; spoken instructions are read by your phone. Map tiles come from OpenFreeMap, which sees your IP address like any website.

What you send us

When you suggest a place or report an error, we store what you write (and your position if you add it) to check and update the listing. Please don't include personal information.

Words typed in search are stored anonymously (not linked to you or your position) so we know which places to add.

Audience measurement

To know how many people use NiceThings and how many come back, we count page views: the page, the city, the language, the type of device (phone or computer) and the site you arrive from.

Your browser keeps a random identifier, used only to recognise a return visit. It holds no name, phone number or position, and your IP address is not stored in these statistics. Clearing the site's data resets it, and your browser's “Do Not Track” setting stops this counting.

When the guidance brings you to a place and you confirm it is really there, we record only that fact: the place, the time and your browser's random identifier. Your position is used to check that you are on the spot, then it is not kept. One exception: if you had to look for the place, or if its point on the map was only approximate, we keep the spot where you found it, to correct the map. That spot is noted for the place, without your identifier.

If you switch on weather alerts, we keep what your browser hands us so that we can send you a notification (an address at your phone's notification service and two keys), your city and your language. Neither your identifier nor your position. You stop them with one tap in the same place, and that address is then erased.

When you add a photo or a video to a place, we keep the file, the words you add and your browser's random identifier. It is published only after the team has checked it, and you can ask us to take it down. A heart on a post is recorded with that same identifier, nothing else.

When you comment on an article, we keep your text, the first name if you give one, and that same identifier. The comment is published only after the team has read it, and you can ask us to take it down.

When you ask for an invitation, we keep what you write in the form (your name, your account, your city, what you love) to answer you: none of it is published. A guest chooses what goes on their page (their photo, their account, their sentence) and can ask for it to be corrected or taken down. A heart only keeps your browser's anonymous identifier.

When you create or open a “Where shall we meet?” vote, we keep the places proposed, each person’s choice, the first name if you give one, and that same identifier. Those who have the link to the vote see the choices and the first names.

Business space (owners)

To claim a business, you sign in with your Google account: we receive your name, email address and profile picture, nothing else. We also store what you give us for the claim (name, number, link to your page) and the history of its steps.

Proof you send (photos, business documents, ID) is kept in a private space only the NiceThings team can open, through links that last one minute. It is deleted 30 days after the decision. To spot fraud we keep an encrypted, irreversible fingerprint of your connection, not your IP address.

Every change made to a listing is recorded with its author, so it can be undone in case of abuse.
